What is a Listed Building Consent?

There are two instances where you need to obtain Listed Building Consent by the Local Planning Authority before any works commence:

  • When a development proposes alterations or extensions to a listed building either on the outside or the inside.
  • For demolishing a listed building (additional permissions might be required to be granted by the LPA).

Local Listed Building Consent Orders can also be granted by Local Planning Authorities in the case of repeated works on the same building(s) in a specified area, with the exclusion of demolition works. This means that owners or developers can carry out similar works on a listed building without the requirement to obtain Listed Building Consent for the same works every time.
