How can you request for a tree to be protected by a TPO?

If you wish a tree to be protected by a TPO (Tree Preservation Order), you need to contact the Local Planning Authority that is responsible for that tree. The Local Planning Authority will only make a Tree Preservation Order if it can be demonstrated that the tree is under threat and that the tree is worthy of protection. If this is the case and the tree

  • appears healthy and stable
  • is visible from a public place and
  • its removal would significantly harm the appearance of the area,

the LPA’s Tree Officer will inspect the tree(s) to see if it(they) qualifies for protection by TPO and advise you accordingly.
