What is scope creep in construction?

When a client is constantly adding more work from what was originally agreed, you might find yourself in a situation called ‘Scope Creep‘. This refers to changes, continuous or uncontrolled growth in a project’s scope, at any point after the project begins. This can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined, documented, or controlled. It is generally considered harmful.

If this happens, the contractor should be entitled to additional fees, as well as an extension of time to complete the additional works. A variation instruction should primarily be issued by the Contract Administrator to formalise the additional works which should also be agreed by the client.
