What is Permitted Development?

Permitted development rights are a national grant of planning permission which allows certain building works and changes of use to be carried out without having to make a planning application. These rights are subject to conditions and limitations to control impact and to protect local amenity. They are also not applicable in designated areas, where development control is more restricted and it’s likely that an Article 4 Direction has been imposed in the designated area.
