What is a Domestic subcontractor?

A domestic subcontractor is one that is selected, procured and awarded packages of work by the main contractor, solely at the discretion of the contractor. These subcontractors are not specified in the contract and they are not bound by any pre-agreed terms and conditions, unlike nominated and named subcontractors.

They are typically used for small packages of work, such as minor repairs or maintenance, that do not require the same level of expertise and qualifications as the main contract work. The main contractor is responsible for ensuring that the domestic subcontractor has the necessary qualifications, insurance, and licenses to perform the work, and for managing the subcontractor to ensure that the work is completed on time and to the required quality and safety standards.

The domestic subcontractor’s role is to complete the packages of work assigned by the main contractor and they are responsible for providing the labour, materials, and equipment necessary to complete their portion of the project.
