Who pays for the cleaning up of contaminated land?

In the case of contaminated land where remedial works (clean-up) are needed to prevent harm due to unacceptable risks, certain parties may have to meet these costs. These parties include the original polluter of the land where they can be found, or the current owner or occupier of the land.

Exclusion tests and other considerations may apply, in such cases the council will pay for some or all of the clean-up.
